Shooting investigation at “The Center” continues, ownership of property becomes a question

web posted November 18, 2008
EDGEFIELD – Very few new details have been released in the drive-by shooting at “The Center” on Macedonia Street this weekend in Edgefield. Edgefield Police Chief Ronnie Carter said Monday that the case was still under investigation. “We still have a lot of people to interview,” Carter said. One thing that is for certain is that there will be no more parties at The Center from this point forward.

“All rentals of the building have been stopped,” Chief Carter said adding that the group who oversees the building said no one has the right to be on the property from this day forward, “anyone caught on the property will go to jail for trespassing.”

Chief Carter said they are still following leads to identify the shooter who was driving a “white Mustang type car” with the convertible top down at the time. A Black Nissan truck was following the white car during the shooting and followed behind in the escape from the area.

Asked if the suspected shooter was from the local area or, as earlier reported, being from New Ellington Chief Carter said, “We’re not ruling anything out at this time”. The shooting victim was said to have been shot in the hip area and was expected to recover fully. His condition and identity was not released on Monday.

Edgefield Mayor Ken Durham said he met with Chief Carter and town attorney Greg Anderson on Monday to see what the town could do to stop the parties being held at the building. Mayor Durham said he too had been informed by the property owners that all rentals have been revoked, “but I want to see something in writing.” Mayor Durham said he did not want to just assume that the parties have stopped, “and then a weekend of two later we get another call about a party.”

Who owns the property has also been raised as an issue. According to public records, the property was donated as a Colored Community Center in 1956 by the Edgefield County School Board in exchange for $1, as long as it was maintained by a non-profit entity. A minority based American Legion and VFW out of Aiken County are supposed to be the current deed holders, but neither hold credentials as a non-profit 501(3)c, Chief Carter said.

The group has been renting out the property for $100 a night for the parties, but no one is quite sure where the money was going since no non-profit is registered. The group could also possibly be held legally liable for damage or injury that resulted from the shooting.

In the event the current “owners” cannot produce the proper certificates as a non-profit for their past control, the property may revert back to the ownership of the Edgefield County School District.
