Snow is on its way to Edgefield

web posted November 20, 2009
EDGEFIELD – It looks like the promise of snow in Edgefield is going to be a reality, according to Edgefield Community Development Association member Sharon Nunnamaker. “We pick the machines up on Monday,” she said. The group was initially going to buy a single machine, but opted for two smaller ones. “It cost us a little more,” she said, raising the cost from $3,000 to $3,500.

However, having the two machines to work together would expand the area the “snow” would be falling. The money to purchase the machines was made possible from Edgefield business owners and private donations. Mrs. Nunnamaker said she also received money from a story that ran on EdgefieldDaily.com last week.

Most of the credit for the logistics on where to place the machines, power supply, and other issues that had to be worked out went to Edgefield Mayor Ken Durham and Edgefield’s Town Maintenance Director David Coleman, Mrs. Nunnamaker said.

Mr. Coleman will pick the machines up on Monday and receive a demonstration of how to operate them before bringing them back to town.

Nunnamaker, who owns Still Magnolia’s on Main Street, gave a demonstration of a small-scale snow machine in the shape of a snowman she has in her store. Within moments of turning it on the snow began to fall.

The snow is created by using water and an evaporating catalyst fluid that are mixed together and shot out of a nozzle. The water is not frozen so the ambient temperature will not affect the ability to make snow.

David Coleman said one machine would be placed on a light pole next to the town’s Christmas Tree, which was being assembled on Thursday. A second pole will be erected on the opposing side facing the tree area with the second machine on top to get the greatest cover of “snow” on the northernmost part of the square.

Mr. Coleman said wind direction and speed would affect the area the falling snow will cover. “We’re going mainly for the tree and the general area around the tree.”

Mrs. Nunnamaker said the snow machines can be turned on and off and even adjust the amount of snow falling by remote control. “You can set it from a light snowfall to a blizzard,” she said.

When will the first snowfall take place? “We’re going to test them out first,” she said adding that they (the ECDA) did not want to promise an initial time until they were sure everything would be in working order. It is hoped to make it snow every weekend during the Christmas shopping season.

The ECDA’s Christmas marketing campaign will also begin in earnest very soon which includes TV commercials asking people to “Shop Historic Edgefield”. The first of two commercials being produced has been completed. Adding the snow to the mix is hoped to draw even more people to Edgefield.

“We’re hoping people will come for the snow, and once they’re here, they’ll take the time to shop a while,” Mrs. Nunnamaker said. The spokeswoman for the ECDA in the commercials is none other than Mrs. Santa Claus who promises she will make the snow fall.
