Locals come to victim’s aid in attempted robbery on
Edgefield Town Square
web
posted November 23, 2009
EDGEFIELD – The peaceful and festive
atmosphere of the Edgefield Town Square turned ugly just after 4 pm
Monday when a witness saw two men push a woman to the ground and then
try to
force her into the backseat of her car. As the witness called 911,
several people came to the woman’s aid and began chasing the men down
Penn Street on foot. The men were unable to take the woman's pocketbook
containing a large sum of money before they fled.
The chase continued down Penn Street and then turned south on Norris
Street before the group lost sight of the two men when they split up.
The men were initially described only as two black males, one well
dressed with a white button up shirt, tie, and khaki pants and the
other dressed in blue jeans and a red shirt.
Edgefield Police and Edgefield County Sheriff’s Deputies began
converging on the area in an effort to locate the suspects. The
Sheriff’s Bloodhound Team was also called to track the men. They began
the trail at the corner of Penn Street and the town square, down Penn,
and continued down Norris Street until the bloodhounds lost the trail
near Adams Street.
According to information obtained from witnesses, the woman drove the
two men from North Augusta to Edgefield and made a trip to the bank.
After the woman exited the bank the men attacked the woman after an
apparent scam went awry.
The Sheriff’s Crime Scene Investigator arrived to process the car the
three were in to try to obtain fingerprints and other evidence that
could identify the two men.
Edgefield Police Chief Ronnie Carter said his department is patrolling
the nearby streets because the men were not from the area and may be
calling friends to come pick them up. “One of them (the suspects) was
seen on the cell phone (while running).”
The Edgefield woman was checked by EMS on the scene but was not
transported to the hospital. Information from the scene stated the
woman did seek medical attention later on her own.
At press time, neither of the men had been located. The investigation
is ongoing and more information will be made available on Tuesday.
