Snow falls in Edgefield Tuesday afternoon
web
posted November 25, 2009
EDGEFIELD – Winter
came a little early on
the Edgefield Town Square Tuesday afternoon when snowflakes began to
fall around the Christmas tree. The flurries continued off and one for
over an hour and some children, as well as a few passing motorists,
took delight in the falling snow. That is until the machines were
turned off.
The new snow machines purchased by the ECDA were being put through
their paces to find the best location to be mounted for this Friday’s
Christmas Tree lighting complete will falling snow. David Coleman, the
town’s Maintenance Director, was making use of a lift to move one of
the snow machines around to different locations to determine what
locations would produce the optimum snowfall.
“The best height
seems to be about twelve feet,” Mr. Coleman said, “any
higher and the wind gets under it and blows it away.” One machine is
mounted atop a streetlight at the northeast corner of the square and
may be moved because it sits at a height of about 20 feet.
Sharon Nunnamaker, who helped spearhead the ECDA’s drive to purchase
the machines, was on hand to offer suggestions of possible locations
and to see the machines working. “It (the snow) looks great,” she said.
The plan is to cover the area around the Christmas tree with snow as it
is lit to kick off the Christmas season. Santa is expected to make an
appearance and speak with children next to the tree.
The machines will produce snow for up to an hour before having to be
refilled with the water mixture used. The ECDA purchased enough of the
additive to produce 16 gallons of the snow making mixture, or 8 hours
of runtime per machine. Mr. Coleman said the machines run better with
distilled water rather than tap water.
The tree lighting on the square will take place Friday, November 27, at
5:30 and “snow” is guaranteed to fall.
