 Elderly woman reports possible identity scam web posted November 26, 2008 EDGEFIELD – An elderly Edgefield woman contacted the Edgefield Police on Tuesday after fearing she was targeted by possible identity thieves. According to the woman’s complaint, she received a call from an unknown subject that told her she would be receiving a free home security system and they needed her Social Security number to process the order, which the woman provided. The woman received a second call from the alleged company to schedule the installation. She then, police reports state, contacted the presumed company ADT and was informed that it was a possible fraud. ADT or other legitimate businesses do not need your Social Security number to schedule an appointment. The 76-year-old woman has contacted her credit companies and informed them of the situation in an effort to fend off any identity theft that may be in the process of taking place. Police reports state, “The use of the victim’s Social Security number could cost the victim an unknown amount of money.” ©
