Suspected car thief captured

web posted November 29, 2007
EDGEFIELD – An arrest has been made in an investigation that has continued since late September into the theft of cars from the Edgefield area Sheriff’s Investigator Jimmy Smith said Wednesday. 52 year-old Larry Robert Lewis, of Augusta, Ga., was taken into custody on Tuesday and is being charged with the theft of a white Cadillac that was taken from a Jeter Street home in Edgefield on September 18.

As EdgefieldDaily.com reported after the September theft, an off-duty deputy spotted a black wrecker matching the description of a wrecker used in a car theft in the area the day before and radioed to have the wrecker stopped and the driver identified.

At the time of the traffic stop the records check of the Cadillac did not come back as stolen and the driver and his female passenger were allowed to continue on their way. Later the Cadillac was reported stolen and a warrant for Mr. Lewis’ arrest was issued but locating him was difficult since he lived in Georgia.

Working with Richmond County authorities Mr. Lewis was located and taken into custody and remains in the Richmond County Detention Center awaiting extradition to Edgefield County Investigator Smith said. “We’re just waiting on them to give us a call so we can go pick him up.”

Inv. Smith said they hold a warrant for the arrest of Mr. Lewis’ female passenger, Courtney Carter, also of Augusta, who they believe was an active participant in the theft.

No charges have been brought in the car theft that occurred on September 17, the day before the alleged theft of the Cadillac Smith said, adding that the theft of the Cadillac is undeniable as Sheriff’s Deputies photographed the wrecker with the Cadillac onboard at the time of the traffic stop. “It doesn’t get any better than that,” Smith said.

Mr. Lewis is expected to be transferred to Edgefield County sometime this week and will face a bond hearing on the charge by the Magistrate’s Office. A photo of Mr. Lewis was not available from Richmond County at this writing.
