Story Time for Kindergarteners at Parker

web posted December 2, 2009
EDGEFIELD – Amy Wilhelm’s Kindergarten Class at WE Parker enjoyed a rare treat on Monday. They built “Rainsticks” after hearing The Rainstick, a fable written by Sandra Chisholm Robinson. The story time and activity was sponsored by the Edgefield Conservation District and the fable told by Neil Bartley of the SC Department of Natural Resources. Each student was assisted in completing their own “Rainstick”, which was used by the students to create their own rainstorm during the class.

Taken from the environmental education materials in Project WET (Water Education for Teachers), this activity is a combination of Social Studies, Science and History. “Rainsticks” are tubular rattles that when used, make a sound like that of falling rain. Historically these instruments have been found in the ancient cultures of both Africa and South America. The bamboo used to make the rainsticks for Mrs. Wilhelm’s class was graciously donated by Ken Durham.

For more information on Project WET or any of the other educational offerings of the Edgefield Conservation District, contact the office at 803-637-3220, extension 3 or visit the website at http://www.edgefieldconservation.com. All programs and services of the Edgefield Conservation District and its partners are provided on a non-discriminatory basis to all persons or groups.
