Merriwether Burglary Suspect In Custody

web posted December 5, 2013

EDGEFIELD The Edgefield County Sheriff's Office has identified a suspect in the November 19 burglary of a Merriwether home in which over $4,000 worth of firearms were taken. Chief Investigator Randy Doran said warrants were in the process of being filed on Robert Lee Jackson, 32, of Richmond County. Jackson is currently being held after a November 26 arrest in Richmond County. He will face at least two serious felony charges in Edgefield County, Doran said.

"I know we're going to charge him with burglary in the first degree and grand larceny," Doran said. Additional charges are being contemplated and will be discussed with the Solicitor's Office.

Tips were received shortly after the burglary was reported that named Jackson as a possible suspect. A search of the home occupied by Jackson by Richmond County Deputies in an unrelated case resulted in at least five of the guns stolen from the Freeland Drive home in Merriwether being recovered.

Inv. Doran said Richmond County authorities have possible pending charges as well.

At the current time Jackson is being held on charges of possession of a weapon by a convicted felon and simple possession of marijuana by the Richmond County Sheriff's Office. Bond has been set at $7,000, however; the Edgefield County Sheriff's Office will be placing a "hold" on Jackson as soon as warrants are issued for his arrest.

Jackson was recently released from prison for a previous crime. Those records were unavailable at this writing.
