Deputy Avoids Head-On Collision With Suspected Drunk Driver

web posted December 7, 2013

EDGEFIELD An Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputy avoided a head-on collision with a suspected drunk driver Thursday afternoon as he was on patrol on Sweetwater Road just before 5 pm. The deputy, who was southbound on Sweetwater Road, saw a northbound silver Honda Element cross over into the southbound lane as the two vehicle approached. The deputy blasted his air horn to get the driver's attention to no avail and had to "go into the ditch" to avoid the head-on collision.

The deputy was able to turn around and stop the driver, identified as Tiffany Anne Ivy Bryant, 43, of Highway 23 West, near Cedar Creek Road. After the traffic stop the deputy smelled an odor of alcohol coming from Bryant who, according to an incident report, admitted to consuming a number of drinks and was also taking prescription medication.

There were also empty beer cartons in the back seat and a cup was found in the console that was partially filled and also smelled of alcohol.

After refusing to take field sobriety tests, Bryant was arrested on suspicion of DUI. Later at the Edgefield County Detention Center she refused to take a breathalyzer test prior to booking.

Bryant was charged with DUI, improper lane change, operating an uninsured vehicle and an ABC violation for the drink found in the console.

She was released Friday morning on a total of $1,857 in personal recognizance bonds. A court date of January 29, 2014 was provided in an incident report.

The deputy noted that there was no damage to the patrol car from the incident.
