Edgefield shooting incident lands one in jail
web
posted December 9, 2009
EDGEFIELD – What started out as a quiet
and rainy Tuesday morning turned out to be anything but quiet as two
deputies walking out of the Magistrates Office reported hearing a
scream and then gunshots ringing out around 10:30 am. Within moments
911 dispatchers began getting calls reporting gunshots fired behind the
Barristers Coffee House on Simpkins Street. As police began to converge
on the area they were told the alleged shooter had fled in a white Ford
F150 pickup truck.
The truck was spotted speeding down Main Street and then turning on
Mims Avenue. Officers tried to intercept the truck but were
unsuccessful. Deputies were able to obtain the tag number on the truck
which was broadcast to surrounding agencies.
Edgefield Police arrived at the scene of the shooting incident to find
no victim and spoke with an employee in the coffee shop. According to
police reports, the worker said the man entered the shop for a short
while, left, and within five to ten seconds she heard him scream and
several gunshots were fired.
As the investigation was underway, a South Carolina State Trooper
spotted a truck speeding and made a
traffic stop on Highway 25 near Lloyd Road, unaware of the shooting incident. The truck stopped by the
Trooper matched the description given of the suspect as well as having
the same tag number.
Sheriff’s Deputies responded to provide backup for the trooper due to
the man having a gun.
The driver, identified as John Hartley Byrd, 27, of Edgefield, was
taken into custody by the Trooper for driving under the influence. A .9
mm pistol was found and confiscated by the Sheriff’s Office, reports
state.
According to information obtained, Mr. Byrd took a breathalyzer test
that registered .13 BAC (blood alcohol content), well above the legal
definition of being intoxicated. He was charged with DUI by the Highway
Patrol and disorderly conduct by the Edgefield Police Department for
the dischare of a firearm in the town limits.
Edgefield Police were able to recover one of the shell casings from the
scene and collected it as evidence.
Police reports did not contain a court date.
