Deputy assaulted in reported fight in courtroom
web
posted December 10, 2009
EDGEFIELD – Edgefield County Deputies and
Edgefield Police after a report of a fight breaking out in the Family
Courtroom Wednesday around noon. At least three deputies were already
on the scene providing security for the courtroom. As officers arrived
two men were found screaming at each other in the “jury room”, one of
which was already in custody.
According to information obtained on the scene, Robert West Jr. had
been sentenced during a hearing in Family Court when an altercation
ensued. Judge Neese ordered the courtroom cleared and family members
were order to leave the courthouse, and at least one refused.
Deputies were able to separate the two bothers, but not before West
resisted being taken into custody and reportedly bit one of the
deputies on the left arm, breaking the skin.
West was then transported to the Edgefield County Detention Center
where he is being held on a custody order awaiting formal charges.
Warrants for resisting arrest and assault on a police officer are
expected to be filed on Thursday in addition to Mr. West’s sentence he
received in Family Court.
No information on the Family Court matter was released other than a
statement that West had been sentenced.
