School Bus Driver Arrested on Drug Charge

web posted December 17, 2013

EDGEFIELD An Edgefield County School District Bus Driver was arrested Monday morning on his way to pick up his bus to start his route picking up children for school. Shawn Michael Schwalbauch, 41, was charged with possession of marijuana and speeding 84 mph in a 50 mph zone.

Schwalbauch was traveling north on Sweetwater Road when an Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputy clocked his black Chevrolet at 84 mph just south of Mays Way. The deputy turned around to conduct a traffic stop due to the excessive speed. After approaching the car, a strong odor of marijuana was detected coming from Schwalbauch and his car.

A search of the car found two hand-rolled cigarettes and a partially smoked hand-rolled cigarette filled with marijuana in a cigarette pack in the passenger front seat area.

Edgefield County School District Superintendent Greg Anderson said Schwalbauch has been placed on leave without pay until more information can be delivered to the school district. Once police reports and drug analysis has been done, "he will most likely be terminated," Anderson said.

Schwalbauch also worked for the district as a custodian in between his duties as a bus driver, Anderson said.

The marijuana cigarettes tested positive, according to the Edgefield County Sheriff's Office. Schwalbauch was released on a total of $1,065 in personal recognizance bonds Monday afternoon.
