Nursing / Rehab Home Resident Charged in Sexual Assault

web posted December 21, 2013

EDGEFIELD A 47-year-old man at a nursing and rehab center has been arrested after he was caught sexually assaulting a heavily medicated female patient. The victim, a 71-year-old woman, is kept heavily sedated due to her condition. A staff worker walked in and witnessed the assault and stopped it and alerted her supervisors. Edgefield Police were then called to the scene.

Jackie Garlington, 47, was interviewed and claimed in a written statement that the woman grabbed his hand and placed it underneath her undergarment, according to an incident report released Friday. Nurses stated that the woman was completely unable to do anything of the sort.

Garland was taken into custody on Thursday on a single charge of criminal sexual conduct in the third degree and immediately released on a $10,000 personal recognizance (PR) bond and was returned to the facility.

Edgefield Police Chief Ronnie Carter said that the facility would have to evict the man in order to make him leave and that the hands of law enforcement were tied as far as removing him from the facility.
