Another party in Edgefield ends in gunfire
web
posted December 24, 2008
EDGEFIELD – After a series of shooting
incidents in Edgefield, police and the town cracked down on the popular
party spot “The Center” bringing what they felt was closure to parties
that drew the wrong crowds. It worked for a while, until this past
weekend when gunfire rang out at a party being held at the Edgefield
Gym. Just prior to the gunfire, two groups wearing what seemed to be
gang colors squared off in the parking lot around 1 am Saturday.
According to police reports, an officer was waiting on a crowd gathered
at the gym for a party to disperse watched as a group on one side of
the parking lot wearing red shirts began moving towards another group
wearing black shirts. As the two groups approached each other a verbal
argument escalated and “it appeared as if both groups of subjects were
going to fight.”
Officers pulled into the parking lot with blue lights on and the two
groups began getting into their vehicles to leave. Officers then saw
traffic stop on the bridge on Church Street near the cemetery and
thought a fight was breaking out. As they approached, a shot rang out.
When the officers arrived several people hiding behind headstones in
the cemetery said the shots came from a brown vehicle. A brown SUV was
spotted traveling at a high rate of speed on Bacon Street and police
conducted a stop.
The driver and passengers were asked to step out of the SUV and gave
consent to search the vehicle. No weapons were found and the group was
allowed to continue on their way.
Police returned to the scene in an effort to recover a shell casing but
failed to locate any evidence. The case is under investigation.
After several similar incidents at The Center in October and early
November, one
man was shot in a drive-by shooting on November 16. He was
airlifted to the MCG Trauma Unit for treatment.
Gang activity was the focus of an
August report after shots rang out at a “back to school” party on
Morange Street.
