Kidnapped child reunited with mother

web posted December 24, 2008
EDGEFIELD – Edgefield Police have recovered an Edgefield youth that they said was abducted Tuesday afternoon. 7-year-old Josef Micah Washington was reunited with his mother around 3 pm at the Edgefield Police Department and was “in good condition”, Edgefield Police Cpl. Michael Butts said, adding “She’s (the mother) is ecstatic.”  Cpl. Butts worked the investigation non-stop for 24 hours until the child was returned.

Police said Josef was taken from the home of his fraternal grandparents Tuesday around 1 pm by his father, Timothy Washington, 30, currently from Atlanta, Georgia. Mr. Washington’s sister, who also is currently living in Atlanta, brought the child back to Edgefield. “The grandmother and the aunt brought him (Josef) to the Police Department.”

The reunion with the mother came just in time for Christmas.

Cpl. Butts said no charges have been filed in the case at this time. “We’re still investigating the situation and have not been in touch with the Solicitor’s Office at this time. Charges are pending on the outcome of the investigation.”

Statements have been gathered throughout the investigation, including from the aunt that brought the child back from Atlanta. Timothy Williams is still in Atlanta, Ga., Cpl. Butts said.

Edgefield Police Chief Ronnie Carter deferred comments to Cpl. Butts for this report.
