Man killed after being struck by car identified
web
posted December 24, 2009
EDGEFIELD – Edgefield County Coroner
Thurmond Burnett released the name of the man killed after being struck
by a vehicle late Tuesday night on Ridge Road. Burnett identified the
man as 51-year-old Lewis McKinney of Old Chappell Ferry Road. McKinney
died from “massive body trauma” according to the autopsy performed
Wednesday morning.
According to Mr. Burnett, the driver just rounded the curve when
meeting another driver coming his way. He spotted something laying in
the road but thought it was a deer and was unable to
avoid hitting Mr. McKinney, who was wearing a brown jacket.
Coroner Burnett said the autopsy showed that McKinney had been struck
only once and was pronounced dead on the scene. “I’ve ruled it an
accidental death,” Burnett said. Toxicology results are pending.
It is unknown at this time why McKinney was laying in the road at night.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is handing the investigation. No
charges have been filed against the driver at this time.
This marks the third fatality on Edgefield County roads this year.
