Promise of $1 million leads to scamming of local resident

web posted December 28, 2007
EDGEFIELD – Scammers continue to entice, and fool, some Edgefield County residents with a promise of a one million dollar prize. Earlier this month an Edgefield man contacted Edgefield Police to say that he received a phone call from a person stating he won a million dollar prize. The man said he was about to transfer the requested $2,500 to receive his prize money but wanted the officer’s opinion first. The officer informed the man if he won a million dollars to tell the caller to take the $2,500 from the prize money and that it sounded like a scam. A Moore’s Road resident was not as cautious.

The 66-year-old Moore’s Road resident called the Sheriff’s Office to report she received a check for $4,546 in the mail and that she had won a total of one million dollars. In order to claim the prize the woman needed to deposit the check and send $2,500 to a man in Canada, which she did.

On Friday, December 21, the woman told an investigator that she was notified by her bank that the check was a fake and she is responsible for the monies, leaving her bank account highly overdrawn.

Edgefield County Chief Investigator Randy Doran has told EdgefieldDaily.com on other reports that anyone asking for you to send money to receive a prize is a scam and should be reported to authorities. Inv. Doran also said in those reports that the suspects are located in another country and are outside the reach of local or federal law enforcement agencies.
