16-year-old charged and released in shooting
web
posted December 29, 2008
EDGEFIELD – Edgefield Police have made an
arrest in the shooting of an Augusta man at The Center last month.
Edgefield Police Chief Ronnie Carter said a 16-year-old has been
charged with assault and battery with the intent to kill, South
Carolina’s equivalent of attempted murder. “He turned himself in with
his attorney Christmas Eve day and was released minutes later on a PR
(personal recognizance) bond,” Chief Carter said.
Chief Carter said the teen has been charged as an adult, but they have
not released his name.
Calls to the Edgefield County Detention Center on the New Ellington
teen revealed no information on the arrest or booking. According to
Chief Carter the teen was bonded out following a Department of Juvenile
Justice bond hearing by Edgefield County Chief Magistrate Davis
Parkman. The “PR” bond was set at $50,000, but requires no money to be
paid to assure the teen returns to face the charge in General Sessions
Court.
An additional charge of possession of a weapon during the commission of
a violent crime could be pending against the teen.
A second warrant has been issued for the driver of the car the shots
were fired from, but no arrest has been made as of Sunday.
The arrest stems from a drive-by
shooting at The Center on Macedonia
Street November 16 when a white convertible with the top down drove
by
the location and the teen allegedly fired at least five shots into the
crowd. An Augusta man was struck by one of the bullets and was
airlifted to the MCG Trauma Unit in Augusta for treatment. He has since
recovered from the injury. The gun used in the shooting has not been
recovered.
The shooting incident, the fourth in five weeks at the location,
prompted town officials to seek the closure of the popular party spot.
Things remained quiet in the town until December 20 when a party at the
Edgefield Town Gym erupted in
gunfire after two groups, one wearing red
shirts and the other wearing black shirts, squared off in the parking
lot. Police converged on the area and the two groups got into several
vehicles and left the scene and stopped a short distance away.
It was then at least one shot rang out but no one was injured.
Edgefield Police are still investigating the incident.
