Dropping names
web posted January 27, 2006

OPINION – With EdgefieldDaily.com being on the internet readers seem to write in more due to the ease of e-mail being just a click away. As a result of being the county’s number one source for local breaking news on the internet we get letters, a lot of letters, each day. Right now there are dozens of e-mails in the Editor’s mailbox. Often times it is a simple thank you note about the web site or a complaint on a government body. Sometimes it is calling other media outlets to task for slanting, or ignoring, the news.

Most of the letters about local media outlets we answer but never confront in print. It is a kind of unwritten rule in journalism. However, with the many letters, and personal comments, that we received about a local paper leaving out two recognizable names in their report on bookings at the Edgefield County Detention Center this week, we were disturbed. We buy and read both local papers each week, so pulling out our copy of the January 25, 2006 edition of this one we checked out what our readers told us, and sure enough, the two names were missing from the report.

If a publication is going to cover the bookings into the county jail, it should do so without conveniently leaving out the names of individuals with connections.

EdgefieldDaily.com reported the complete list of those booked into the County Detention Center for the week of January 16 through January 23, 2006. We noticed the names and published them all. That is honest and unbiased reporting. Though the names of the two people, one the wife of a prominent Edgefield businessman and the other the son of the Edgefield County Chief Magistrate were not worthy of a story (just yet), we reported them and are following the cases through the judicial system very closely.

Could the omissions be just an oversight?  Yes, it could be that or shoddy editing. We all make mistakes sometimes. A couple other names were also missing from their report. However, having both prominent names missing from the report it seems unlikely that it was by accident or coincidence. One maybe, but not both. Perhaps it was a space constraint problem.

One thing is definitive; if you want the actual list of those arrested each week, including the rich, powerful, or connected there is only one place in Edgefield County you will find it, EdgefieldDaily.com. Apparently, we are the only media outlet that does not care who your husband or daddy is if you are arrested.

EdgefieldDaily.com continues its commitment to provide a full and factual account of the events taking place in our county and communities. Our credibility is worth more than whose name we can drop during a dinner party conversation, or the ones we can drop off an arrest report.
