Congress gets a taste of Liberty and does not like it

web posted June 5, 2006

OPINION – If it were never clear before, it is certainly clear now, there is one party in control of this country and it is not the Republicans or the Democrats. It is the political elitists of both parties. The “mainstream media”, which launched 24/7 coverage of Tennessee Republican Bill Frist being investigated and demanding his resignation, remains deafly silent on  William J. Jefferson, Democrat of Louisiana, being caught on tape by the FBI taking a $100,000 bribe. Exhibiting the clear indication of “unbiased media” at its finest once again.

Not to mention that while residents of New Orleans, Jefferson’s constituents, were in need of rescue from floodwaters left by breaches in the levies after hurricane Katrina. Mr. Jefferson took the military units deployed to save lives to retrieve items from his own plush home, reportedly including over $90,000 in cash from a freezer. At least we know why it is called “hard cold cash”.

Aside from the fact that Democrats have circled their wagons around a fellow party member in obvious trouble, once again, this time the Republicans have joined in to help defend their own private sanctity because the FBI took “evidence” from Congressman Jefferson’s Congressional Office in a raid. As the Saturday Night character, the “Church Lady” would say… “Isn’t that special.”

Most Republicans and Democrats agree that their offices are protected and cannot be searched. Many have claimed the search to be “unconstitutional” due to “separation of powers”. What both parties have shown is they believe they are above the laws every other citizen is forced to obey.

The law, including our Constitution, says everyone is held accountable for his or her actions. This includes the political elites of both parties. Your “public office” is without question under the jurisdiction of the public eye that foots the bill for it, not to mention that of law enforcement.

Who do these Congressional members think they are?

Claire Wolfe, a well-known author stated, “America is at that awkward stage. It is too late to work within the system, but too early to start shooting the bastards." The Republicans in Congress, with their latest protectionism of a Democrat allegedly caught red-handed taking bribes on tape, shows Ms. Wolfe to be far more insightful than given credit for.

All too often people say, “You can’t fight city hall” or “you can’t fight the government” and win. Thomas Paine, a founder of our Constitution said, "When the People fear the Government, it is Tyranny. When the Government fears the People, it is Liberty."

It seems our elected leaders in the Congress are getting a taste of American Liberty and do not like it.

“Isn’t that special”.
