Who is running this county?

web posted June 16, 2006

OPINION – The County Council is discussing personnel policy and Administrator Adams supports a plan that all county employees should work a 40-hour workweek. However, in order to make the budget work five county employees will need to be terminated to balance the budget. What five county employees will lose their job if the plan goes forward? Why, five that the Administrator nor the County Council has control over, the five elected offices in the county.

According to the plan, the offices of the Clerk of Court, Auditor, Probate Court, Treasurer, and the Sheriff would all have to release one employee and agree not to hire any replacements. We have only one question; what genius thought that lead zeppelin is going to fly, other than the Administrator?

The County Council just approved Sheriff Adell Dobey’s budget to allow the addition of two deputies. Administrator Adams insisted one was enough by his figures. Under the plan, Administrator Adams gets his way by forcing the Sheriff to release one of the two employees the County Council approved.

There is also an issue over a hire of an elected official’s office that the Administrator objected to that would be terminated under the plan. That is rather quaint.

Obviously, there is no need to expend an employee in the Administration Building. After all, even when you retire, quit, or otherwise “depart” from the Administrator’s Office you continue to work. We could balance the budget and reduce taxes by thinning the pork in the Administrator’s Office alone. What we need evidently is to have a full supply of bodies to lean on shovels, so to speak, if you work in the right office.

Who is running this county, elected leaders or the County Administrator?

If the county needs to trim its budget, it needs to trim its own budget, not the budgets of other elected officers. The old saying of clean up your own back yard before you complain about mine rings very true here.

Until the County Council can publicly justify the money spent in the Administrator’s budget, they have no business demanding cuts by other elected officers.
