Edgefield Town Council January meeting

web posted January 4, 2007

EDGEFIELD – The Edgefield Town Council held their first meeting of 2007 Wednesday night with Councilman Lloyd being absent. With a short agenda Mayor Durham and the council approved the minutes and reports quickly and Mayor Durham then introduced the Visitor of the Month, Mrs. Pamela Moore of the Edgefield Arts Council.

Mrs. Moore said they are currently housed at the old Rocky Shop building until Paper Whites opens this spring on the town square. The Arts Council began in May of 2005 with just seven members, “now we have over thirty,” Mrs. Moore said.

Mrs. Moore invited the public to visit the Rocky Shop location and see the exhibits of local artists including basket weavers, painters, crafters, and pottery among others. Once the new Paper Whites store is opened they will also offer lessons in all the arts. For more information on the Arts call 803-637-6763 or 706-491-1135. You may reach Mrs. Moore by e-mail at Pamela@artazure.com

Next on the agenda was Dustin Lalonde to present an Eagle Scout project that was undertaken as a step towards receiving his Eagle Scout designation. The project was rebuilding the dugout at the Addison Street Park which had been damaged by a falling tree. As part of the process to gaining Eagle Scout Dustin had to get the approval for the project, make a materials list, and undertake the project from start to finish. Dustin said a total of 70 “man hours” were given by he and fellow scouts completing the four day project. Dustin is just two badges away from receiving Eagle Scout.

Mayor Durham then directed the town council’s attention to the second reading of an ordinance annexing Edgefield Fuel and Convenience into the town limits. Mayor Durham stated he was a “minority owner” of the company and abstained from the discussion turning the floor over to Councilman Ellis who led the discussion and vote to approve the annexation.

Mayor Durham then resumed the floor and asked for the Administrator Gambrel to give his report. Mr. Gambrel said the Crest Building demolition has been completed and there were just a few loose ends being addressed at this time. The expansion of the parking areas at the Edgefield Soccer Complex was moving forward and should double the available parking on the “trestle end” when completed.

The Macedonia Project is underway and one home has been completed with one underway and a third “ready to go.” The Edgefield County Sewer and Water (Shanks) Project is about to have a contract in place and work should begin soon.

Councilman Rogers gave a report from the Fire Committee saying in the month of December the Fire Department responded to ten calls and had to rebuild one pump on truck 273. The department has also received a $1,300 matching grant from the Wild Land Grant for equipment.

With no other reports Mayor Durham said Police Chief Ronnie Carter is tracking tickets and warnings given due to complaints. Officers are now patrolling “side streets” to better control speeders.

Before ending the meeting Mayor Durham took time to thank council members, staff, administrator, and workers for their efforts over the past year. The holiday promotion was also a big success Mayor Durham said adding that businesses reported increased sales due to the advertisements. Mayor Durham wanted to thank those who put on the promotion for a job well done.

With no other business the meeting was adjourned.
