Relay for Life to "Color the Town Purple"

web posted April 3, 2007

EDGEFIELD – Lynn Rearden attended the Edgefield Town Council meeting Monday night to provide the mayor and council with information on the 5th Annual Relay for Life being held on June 1 and 2. “We want to color the town purple”, Ms. Rearden told the council, by placing purple bows and ribbons on the lampposts in the town.

Ms. Rearden said she would be making similar requests to the towns of Johnston and Trenton for the week preceding the Relay for Life, “this is an Edgefield County event,” she said. The ribbons will be provided by the local Relay for Life organization. Additional bows would be available to local merchants for a donation of $5 to place on their doors in support of the fundraiser.

Relay for Life raises money to fight cancer across the nation.

Mayor Ken Durham jokingly asked Ms. Rearden, who was wearing purple shoes, if they could wear purple shoes as well. Ms. Rearden joked back that Mayor Durham could wear a purple shirt, “it could make for a special picture for the papers” which drew a laugh as a Wandering Minds posting regarding a red shirt worn by Mayor Durham was spoken of frequently during the meeting.

Mayor Durham laughed and responded, “I don’t know if I look good in purple, but I know I look good in red.”

The council voted to allow the ribbons and said they would check to see if the town public works department could assist in placing the ribbons on the lampposts.

EdgefieldDaily.com will have more information on Relay for Life events planned over the next two months and contact information if you would like to volunteer or provide monetary support.
