Edgefield Town Council approves October parade for rodeo, American
Legion to get needed funds from Heritage Jubilee
web
posted April 8, 2008
EDGEFIELD – The Edgefield Town Council
held their regular Monthly meeting Monday night with Mrs. Barbara Ware
and Mrs. Vicki Loughner with Old 96 District of SC as the Visitor of
the Month speaking and several requests being brought forward for
approval by the council.
Mrs. Ware said she was appreciative of having the opportunity to share
some of what the Old 96 District tourism committee does to promote
tourism in the five counties that are covered which includes Abbeville,
Edgefield, Greenwood, Laurens, and McCormick. The committee has been in
operation since 1981and markets and promotes attractions in each of the
counties in an effort to bring in tourism dollars.
One of the main claims to fame in the area is that South Carolina is
second only to California in the productions of peaches. Keying on that
distinction the group has held the Peach Off for the past four years
for local residents to offer up dishes made with peaches. This year’s
event will be held in McCormick and then Laurens County with the hopes
that one of the local festivals will pick it up for the following years.
Next on the agenda was John Brumbaugh of J & B Properties, LLC
which had requested rezoning a parcel of property in the town. Mr.
Brumbaugh stated he wished to withdraw the request which had been
approved by the town’s planning commission earlier on a 3-2 vote. The
request to withdraw was granted.
Sam Watson, Commander of the American Legion Hezzie Griffis Post #30,
was present to seek funding for the post. Mr. Watson was informed that
the Heritage Jubilee has stepped forward to make the Post the recipient
of the proceeds of this year’s festival, which donates between $4,000
and $6,000 to its beneficiary each year. Mayor Durham said the festival
would be based on a “Honoring the Veterans” theme this year on behalf
of the Post.
Sandy and Wesley Quarles also addressed the town council with a request
to hold a “kick off” parade on October 18 and 2 pm for the annual Sandy
Oaks Professional Rodeo that will be held on October 24 and 25. Mrs.
Quarles said the parade would feature horses, mules, bulls, and wagons
and no motorized vehicles of bands. Mr. Quarles said this was to
prevent anything from spooking the animals in the parade. The request
was granted.
The parade route will begin at Piedmont Tech and end at the Town
Square, which will be closed off for the event. Mrs. Quarles said this
year’s theme for the rodeo would honor Native American Indians.
A request by David Satcher to place a wreath and a Confederate Flag at
the Confederate Monument on May 10, Confederate Memorial Day, was also
approved.
Two resolutions were approved, the first naming April as Fair Housing
Month and a second in support of a Community Development Block Grant
for sewer upgrades.
It was also agreed to accept sealed bids for the fountain that once sat
on the town square. Mayor Durham said it was just the fountain fixture
since the brickwork was destroyed and the pump was inoperable.
The purchase of a new mosquito fogger for $7,830 was approved to
replace the 31-year-old present fogger. The bid accepted was the second
lowest bid, with the lowest bid being $6,845.
