Edgefield Town Council approves final reading on budget

web posted June 2, 2009
EDGEFIELD – The Edgefield Town Council gave final approval to their $1,257,100 budget that assesses not property taxes for residents and includes a 2% raise for town employees. The vote to approve the budget was unanimous with Councilman Otis Yeldell being absent due to a work conflict. A public hearing held just prior to the vote drew no comments from local citizens at the meeting.

In other business the town council approved a request from Sandy and Wesley Quarles to hold a parade for the 4th annual Sandy Oaks Professional Rodeo on Saturday, October 24, at 2 pm. Mrs. Quarles said they expected a much larger parade this year than the initial one held last year. Edgefield Police Chief Ronnie Carter said he was working with the Quarles’ to get the proper road closures in place for the parade. The request was approved.

The council also approved a first reading of an ordinance to annex three properties belonging to Edgar Caddell Jr., Christon Lanham, and Kenneth and Dorothy Holloway into the town limits. Mayor Ken Durham said he was glad to see people wanting to be a part of the town.

The town council also approved a request from Police Chief Ronnie Carter to hire a part-time police officer to help with special events and to fill in when an officer is out sick or leaves the department for another job. Chief Carter said in the last year that his department has lost three officers. The officer would have to already be certified and would only work approximately one day per pay period at a cost to the town of approximately $4,000.

A request from Public Works Director David Coleman to hire an Experience Works Program worker, paid for under the state agency, as a part time employee was also approve. Mr. Coleman said that under the program Edgefield County had too many in the program and it was hoped by hiring to worker from the program would result in the position possibly being refilled. Mr. Coleman said that in the past the program did not adhere to strict rules that the employees move on after six months, and this particular hire has been in the program in the town for 15 years. “That’s coming to an end,” Mr. Coleman said.
