Edgefield Town Council welcomes new business owner at meeting
web
posted September 10, 2009
EDGEFIELD – The
Edgefield Town Council
welcomed Gail Mercer, owner of the new “Mercy Me!” shop on Main Street,
as the visitor of the month Wednesday night at their monthly meeting.
Ms. Mercer spoke about the new business and the citizens of Edgefield
prior to the council moving on to other items including a new police
car.
Ms. Mercer said the new store is the only independently owned Doncaster
Outlet store in the nation, “all the rest are company owned.” As talk
of the new Turkey Store was making its way around she began thinking
about opening the business and when the building across the street came
available she felt the timing was right. The store hours are from 10 am
until 6 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Wednesday and
Saturday will be a half days from 10 am until 2 pm, although Ms. Mercer
said if business is good she may extend the Saturday hours. Already
over a dozen customers have come from the Augusta and Martinez area,
“That’s good for me, good for Doncaster, and good for Edgefield,” Ms.
Mercer said.
In other business Edgefield Police Chief Ronnie Carter addressed the
Mayor and council about the purchase on a new police car. Mayor Ken
Durham stated during the discussion that there was no car budgeted this
year but he understood the need to replace a Chevrolet Impala currently
in the fleet.
Chief Carter explained that the patrol car is currently in need of
brake repairs, including replacing the anti-lock braking system, which
was going to cost around $2,600. The value of the car, Carter said, was
only $3,700 and the town would never be able to recoup the cost of the
repair.
Chief Carter presented the Mayor and council with a cost analysis with
the Dodge Charger and Ford Crown Victoria coming in as the lowest
priced choices at $22,227 and $21,914 respectively. Although the Ford
was $313 cheaper, the resale value of the charger was much higher and
therefore a better value. The council agreed and voted to purchase the
Charger. Chief Carter said it would take another $5,000 to equip with
lights, stripes, and radio equipment.
Where the unbudgeted funds would come from was not stated at the
meeting.
In other business the council approved several requests, named Albert
Rainsford as a new Planning and Zoning Commissioner for Ward 4, and
tapped Scott Mims for the Edgefield County Recreation Committee to
replace David Coleman who chose not to serve another term. Mayor Durham
said they were in talks with the county to see if the terms could be
staggered to avoid having to replace two members in one year.
The requests that were approved were for the Women in Unity to use the
soccer complex for their annual Youth Rally on July 31, 2010; Ms. Jenny
Banner to use the Town Square on Tuesday November 2, 2009 for a program
honoring the Women’s National Day of Prayer; Sandy Quarles with Sandy
Oaks Pro Rodeo to place a banner across Main Street from October 12
through 31 to advertise the rodeo; and Angi Harter, coach of the
Bulldog Cheerleaders, request to use the Town Gym for practice.
Under committee reports Councilman Herbert Yarborough stated the Fire
Department responded to twelve fire calls and four drills in August.
Mayor Durham said at the end of the meeting that he wanted to thank
everyone involved in the summer events that took place, the drive in
movies, farmer’s markets, and other activities that brought many people
to Edgefield. Durham praised the police officers for their work and
presence, however stated that there was still a problem with speeding
drivers. “There’s still a major problem with traffic,” he said.
Mayor Durham said he sees the officers on the side streets patrolling,
which was helping, but complaints of speeding drivers persist and he
suggested the officers continue their present patrols in an effort to
curtail speeding on side streets.
With no other business the meeting was adjourned.
