Edgefield Town Council approves Comprehensive Plan, promotes Police Officers

web posted October 2, 2007
EDGEFIELD – The Edgefield Town Council held their October meeting Monday night and voted to enter into a Public Hearing to discuss the updated comprehensive plan as prepared by Rick Green with Upper Savannah Council on Governance (USCOG) and recommended by the Edgefield Town Planning and Zoning Commission.

The update on the required guide was last updated five years ago Mayor Durham said. He also commented that he read parts of the plan and wanted to know if it focused on tourism, the arts, and downtown functions that the town has been presenting lately. Mr. Green said those items, including historical and cultural items were listed separately.

After no questions from the public the public hearing was closed and the regular meeting resumed and approved minutes of the previous meeting and the financial report.

Visitor of the month was Teresa Pollard, Director of Community Outreach, with Corner Stone. The Corner Stone facilities offer drug and alcohol outpatient services, counseling, family counseling, group sessions, and preventative programs in Edgefield, Greenwood, McCormick, and Abbeville Counties. They were established in 1973. For more information you can call the Edgefield Office at 803-637-4050.

Mayor Durham then directed the council’s attention to a reading on the accepted Comprehensive Plan which was approved. The council also approved a request from John Rikard to place killed in action crosses on the town square for Veterans Day from November 7 until November 12, and the town holidays for 2008.

Edgefield Police Chief Ronnie Carter was recognized to bring forward three promotions in the Police Department, Lance Corporals Michael Butts and Mark Pica to Corporal and Sam Pruett to Lance Corporal. The Corporals jobs will entail extra duties under the job description Chief Carter said.

The promotions were approved and each candidate will serve a six month probationary period in their respective positions.

Mayor Durham gave his report stating he felt the Downtown Shop Around was a “huge success” and passed out an entry on the Aiken Standard from a citizens saying they enjoyed it and hoped for more such activities. The Mayor also said the local merchants were contributing to opening up parking spaces on the square “and I want to commend them for that.” A Bike Trail extending from Edgefield to Trenton is also being looked into Mayor Durham said. Letters have been sent to the Railroad seeking permission to go forward with the planning.

“It would be a twelve mile track, six miles one way and six miles back,” Mayor Durham said. The idea is only in early discussion.

Mayor Durham also wanted to remind everyone of the upcoming Heritage Festival coming this Friday and Saturday at Oakley Park. Police Chief Ronnie Carter is sending a map of street closures that will be posted later.

With no other business the meeting was adjourned.
