Fox Creek Charter High School holds groundbreaking ceremony Saturday

web posted January 26, 2009
MERRIWETHER – Fox Creek Charter High School held a groundbreaking ceremony Saturday and although the weather was gloomy the spirits of those attending were bright. “Today we break ground on a new center for hope and inspiration in the Merriwether Community,” Dr. Tim Murph, Fox Creek’s Principal said in his opening remarks Fox Creek Charter High School would, “serve our community’s educational needs with distinction for many years to come.”

Fox Creek Board of Directors Chairwoman Sherolyn Bishop said a dream that began in 2003 has become a reality and that it was still her dream that, “One day, students that graduate Fox Creek High School will be the future teachers, doctors, and parents who move back here and pass along these values to their children.” It was also hoped that students would become teachers at the school in the years to come. “What an awesome day that would be,” she said.

“A school is the people who make up the school not the building, but the building is a symbol of the school,” Mrs. Bishop said. It is a symbol of the perseverance and dedication of those who worked to make the new building possible.

Jessie Risher, Area Director for the USDA Rural Development, was on hand and stated that the funding for the $5.9 million loan was provided by taxpayers’ money from the federal government. “It is your money coming back here to serve this community.”

North Augusta SC House of Representative Don Smith said he remembered being at the leased building the school is currently located for the ribbon cutting. “Quite honestly with ya, back five years ago when we went through that there was some question of whether Fox Creek would be successful or not. I don’t think there any question Fox Creek has been successful beyond any thought that I had, Rep. Smith said and said he has no doubt the school will have a “bright future”.

Edgefield Construction President Ken Durham said he expected a completion date of the new building sometime this summer.

The building will not have a cafeteria where hot lunches are prepared for the students by a food staff. Students will bring lunch, use vending, or off site prepared food for lunches.
