Local resident named Teacher of the Year

Edgefielddaily.com
web posted May 30, 2005

Helen Garvin, of Trenton, was named Teacher of the Year 2005 for Belvedere Elementary Friday, May 27th.

Mrs. Garvin is a 29 year veteran of teaching who has been at Belvedere for 14 years and has won the Teacher of the Year three times for the school, the last time in 2000. Prior to Belvedere Elementary she spent seven years at North Augusta Elementary winning the award once there and the award as Young Educator of the Year in her eight years at Merriwether Elementary.

Mrs. Garvin said she actually retired this past January but will remain at her present job teaching under the TERI Program (Teacher Employment Retirement Incentive Program). Mrs. Garvin teaches math and science and said what she likes best about teaching is, “Watching the math click in the minds of kids that did not get it before,” saying, “it’s exciting.”

Her name will be included in the list of names for Aiken County teachers for the county Teacher of the Year Award. From there the winner will advance to the state then national level.

Edgefield Daily.com congratulates Mrs. Helen Garvin for her award and her lifetime commitment to teaching our leaders of tomorrow.
