General Sessions Court gets underway Edgefielddaily.com web posted August 18, 2005 EDGEFIELD - General Sessions Court opened Monday of this week in the Edgefield County Courthouse with a full docket. By Wednesday morning all but two cases had been resolved or remanded back to Magistrate Court. The remaining two cases were jury trials which got underway Wednesday morning. Andre Methelus is in the midst of a jury trial for charges of trafficking in cocaine and crack cocaine that stem from a February 25th, 2005 arrest. His trial is expected to go to the jury sometime this afternoon. Edgefieldaily.com will follow up with the results of the trial on Friday. The second trial, expected to begin Friday morning, is that of Tyler Jermaine Stevens who is charged in a July 2004 armed robbery of Dodges store on Edgefield Road in Edgefield. In addition to the armed robbery charges he faces charges of possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime. He has been held at the Edgefield County Detention Center since his arrest on July 23, 2004. Last year he earned another charge for the alleged attempted escape from the Edgefield County Detention Center. Police say Mr. Stevens attempted to crawl through an opening in the ceiling during repairs of the heating and air conditioning system at the jail. He was unable to get through the opening which would have led him no where. The area was only for internal access of the ventilation system. Mr. Stevens gave officials another surprise during pretrial motions stating that he would be representing himself in the trial. By Wednesday morning he had changed his mind and attorney James B. Huff of North Augusta took over the defense. Mr. Huff had been assisting Mr. Stevens since he made his wishes known to the court months ago. His trial is scheduled to begin Friday morning but could begin this afternoon if Mr. Methelus’ trial ends early. Edgefieldaily.com will report the results of this trial Saturday morning and will have the full results of General Sessions Court posted on Wednesday, August 24th.
