Jury reaches decision in trafficking trial

Edgefielddaily.com
web posted August 19, 2005

EDGEFIELD - Andre Methelus, on trial for trafficking in cocaine and crack cocaine charges that stem from a February 25th, 2005 arrest, had his trial end early Thursday afternoon. After a short time in the courtroom the decision was left up to the jury which began deliberations about noon. It took just a few minutes for the jury to reach a unanimous verdict.

After the announcement of a verdict all parties were summoned back into the courtroom and the verdict was read, guilty.

Judge Jackson Gregory thanked the jury for their service and turned his attention to the sentencing phase of the trial. Examining the facts of the case Judge Gregory sentenced Mr. Methelus to twelve years to run consecutive on the charges and eighty-five percent of the sentences must be served. In totality he faced as much as fifty years in prison for the charges.

One jury member we spoke with said, "the lies that were told were so unbelievable it was easy," to reach a guilty verdict.
