Piedmont Tech Associates to be Honored at State Conference

web posted January 29, 2009
GREENWOOD – Three Piedmont Technical College associates have been named Outstanding Educators for the 2008 – 2009 academic year and will be honored at a statewide conference. The three will join fellow winners from sister colleges at the annual South Carolina Technical Education Association convention next month.

This year’s honorees are Delmar Brewington, faculty; Pleshette Elmore, staff; and Andy Omundson, administrative. Brewington thought he wanted to become a history teacher, so he enrolled in evening classes at USC-Aiken. He received his bachelor’s degree in history in 1995, but he was also close to earning a degree in English. In 1996, he completed his bachelor’s degree in English and decided he wanted to teach college English. He enrolled in the Masters of Arts in Teaching degree program at Lander University and graduated in 1997.

Brewington accepted a job at Piedmont Technical College in 1998 as an adjunct instructor in the English department, hoping that a full-time position would become available within a few years. That opening came the following year. Brewington applied, but he said he didn’t expect to get it. But he did. In 2000, Brewington was offered the position of instructor and coordinator for developmental and transitional English. Not only is he loving it, Brewington is successful at it. He was recently honored with the Outstanding Service to Students Award sponsored by the South Carolina Association for Developmental Education.

Elmore first came to PTC in 1998 as a student rather than a staff member. She graduated from Lander University in 1990 and spent four years at Self Regional. In 1994, she moved on to GLEAMNS as a case worker, then as the center coordinator. While at GLEAMNS, Elmore enrolled in the Early Childhood Development program at PTC and graduated in 1999. But, she decided that she was ready to move on from younger children to older students.

Elmore joined the TRIO program at Piedmont Tech, working in the Academic Advantage area in 2004. She said she enjoyed helping the students and, in 2007, she moved into the position of nursing support counselor, serving as the liaison between the nursing students and the faculty. While the position does have its challenges, Elmore said that seeing the students complete their journey and graduate is very rewarding.

Omundson has spent the last 28 years serving the students of Piedmont Tech. He came to the college in 1981 as a part of the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA) program and later became director of JTPA. He served as director of Counseling and Placement, as associate dean of Counseling and Student Life and as dean of Students before assuming his current role as dean of Student Services.

Omundson received his associate degree from Anderson College in 1975. He then earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Clemson University. Omundson has been a statewide leader for counselors, serving as chair of peer groups in counseling and placement. He has worked as the conference manager for the regional “New Directions” Student Services conference and has represented the two-year colleges for the South Carolina College Personnel Association.
