Saluda deputy questioned about drug purchases

web posted January 31, 2008
NINETY SIX – A Saluda County Sheriff’s Office deputy has been questioned about the purchasing of large amounts of Ephedrine/Sudafed according to a report by the Index Journal.com. The report states that according to a Ninety Six Police Department report, Sgt. Michael D. Franklin was patrolling near the Shell station in the town on Sunday evening when he was flagged down by the state’s district manager. The manager said Marty Cecil Fulmer, an off-duty deputy who was driving his squad car, had purchased more than 144 pills since Jan. 9.

A Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office report indicates Fulmer has purchased 16 boxes of Ephedrine pills containing 24 blister packs since the January date.

Non-prescription drugs such as Sudafed have become prime targets for people who purchase or shoplift the products for methamphetamine cooks, who then extract the pseudoephedrine from the binding agents in tablets or capsules using a dangerous and highly toxic process. The drug’s popularity with the meth culture has led many state governments, including South Carolina, to monitor the sale of over-the-counter products that contain pseudoephedrine, the active ingredient crucial to the manufacture of meth.
