Florida Hospital Executive Selected to Lead Self Regional Healthcare
web
posted May 14, 2008
GREENWOOD—James A.
Pfeiffer of Palm
Harbor, Fla. has accepted the position of President and Chief Executive
Officer at Self Regional Healthcare, according to Len Bornemann,
chairman of the hospital’s board of trustees.
Bornemann informed hospital staff Tuesday afternoon the board
unanimously selected Pfeiffer to succeed M. John Heydel, who last fall
announced plans to retire this summer after having served as Self
Regional’s President and CEO since January of 1998. Pfeiffer will begin
work on July 7 as President-Elect and will assume the position of
President and CEO upon Heydel’s retirement on Aug. 8.
Pfeiffer currently serves as Executive Vice President and Chief
Operating Officer of Morton Plant Mease Healthcare (MPMHC) in the Tampa
and Clearwater area of Florida, Bornemann said. MPMHC is a
four-hospital integrated system consisting of 1,261 beds, with net
revenues of more than $800 million.
“I am very thrilled and honored to be chosen to lead Self Regional
Healthcare,” Pfeiffer said Tuesday morning. “John Heydel and the entire
hospital team have strived for excellence and taken Self to an
extremely high level. They should be extremely proud of these
accomplishments, and I look forward to working with the team to carry
on that tradition of excellence.”
“It’s all about the community we serve,” Pfeiffer continued. “Our goal
will be to continue to build on that level of trust so that people in
our community will have complete confidence in Self Regional when they
need our services.”
Pfeiffer’s hospitals in Florida offer a full range of medical and
surgical services as well as a family practice residency program in
affiliation with the University of South Florida. MPMHC also has a
joint operating agreement with Baycare Health System, which includes
five additional major hospitals in the Tampa Bay area.
Bornemann said Pfeiffer’s selection concludes an extremely thorough
nationwide search that began seven months ago and attracted more than
300 candidates. He attributed Self Regional’s reputation for quality
and its well respected team of employees and physicians with creating
significant interest in the position.
The selection process involved broad participation and included
trustees, hospital administrators, employees and members of the medical
staff, he noted. Joining Bornemann on the CEO search committee were
fellow hospital trustees Hazel Hughes, Chuck Fox and Dr. David
Isenhower.
“Pfeiffer is an experienced leader who understands the value of quality
and safety in serving patients and the community,” Bornemann shared.
“He has helped lead his previous hospitals to numerous awards in this
area, including recognition as Top 100 Hospitals overall.”
“His hospital system also was the first in Florida to earn Magnet
status for Nursing,” Bornemann continued. “I know he now looks forward
to continuing the Self Excellence journey and building upon the many
successes that this process has achieved for our hospital over the past
several years.”
Self Regional’s new President and CEO is a native of Fayetteville, NC.
He holds the BS degree in Biology and an MBA in Finance from Florida
State University. Prior to his current position, Pfeiffer served five
years as President and CEO of Mease Hospitals. Upon graduating from
college, he began his health career as a Registered Medical
Technologist.
Pfeiffer worked in the field of healthcare finance with Ernst &
Young before entering hospital administration. He and his wife of 28
years, Leona, are parents to three children ranging in age from 15 to
23. He is an avid runner and cyclist.
Self Regional Healthcare is a major referral and medical center,
providing advanced healthcare services to a population of more than a
quarter of a million people in the Lakelands region of Upstate South
Carolina. Almost every major medical specialty is available through a
medical staff of more than 180 physicians. Licensed for 421 beds, the
hospital was founded in1951.
