Authorities in two states investigate possible kidnapping and sexual
assault
web
posted June 26, 2009
GREENWOOD – Greenwood and Columbia County
authorities are investigating a possible sexual assault and kidnapping
that began at a grocery store in Columbia County, Georgia, crossed
through Edgefield County, and culminated in the sexual attack just
inside the Greenwood County line on Highway 25 Wednesday night. Details
are incomplete; however, initial information says a man abducted the
woman at gunpoint and drove to the deserted wooded location where the
attack was said to have taken place.
The initial report was made to the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office,
who called for the assistance of Edgefield County Sheriff’s Deputies to
help maintain a perimeter in the area until the Greenwood County
Bloodhound Team could arrive and begin tracking the suspect.
SLED was also notified to aid in the investigation, but the use of a
helicopter with infrared cameras to track the suspect in the wooded
area at night was unconfirmed.
Edgefield County Sheriff’s Captain Chris Wash said Thursday Edgefield
County’s involvement was only as an assisting agency to maintain the
perimeter in Edgefield County, which was not far from the alleged site
of the attack.
The Greenwood County Sheriff’s could not provide any additional
information other than to confirm that the man accused in the assault
was an “older white male, about 6 foot tall with grey hair, and armed
with a handgun.” There was no clothing description available or vehicle
description as the man used the victim’s vehicle to take her to the
deserted wooded area and then fled on foot.
There was no word on the condition of the victim or further details of
the attack available.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Greenwood County Sheriff’s
Office at 864-942-8600.
Edgefield County Deputies remained in the area until around midnight.
The suspect was never located.
