Cornerstone celebrating Recovery Month with 5K Run/Walk
web
posted August 31, 2009
GREENWOOD – Cornerstone is sponsoring its
first-ever "Steps For Sobriety" 5K Fun Run/Walk in celebration of
national Recovery Month. The race will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday,
September 19 in Uptown Greenwood. "Recovery Month highlights the
benefits of substance abuse treatment and promotes the message that
recovery from addiction - in all its forms - is possible," Teresa Roy
of Cornerstone said.
"With this race, we are seeking to celebrate the accomplishments of
those in recovery and to honor those who have been impacted by
addiction. Furthermore, the proceeds of this race will help
Cornerstone to continue providing drug addiction treatment services."
"In some form or fashion, we have all been impacted by addiction. We
have seen someone that we know struggle with alcohol, tobacco, or other
drugs. The more we know about addiction, the more we can reduce
the negative stigma associated with addiction and treatment."
The race will begin at the fountain in Uptown Greenwood, travel along
the Heritage Trail, and return to the fountain. The flat course
is a mixture of asphalt and dirt, and it is suitable for runners and
walkers of all skill levels.
The race entry fee is $15, if the registration is postmarked by
September 11. After that date, the fee will be $20. Race day
registrations will be accepted beginning at 7:30 a.m. However,
only those runners and walkers who have pre-registered will be
guaranteed a race T-shirt.
Prizes will be awarded to the overall male and female winners as well
as to the top male and female finishers in each age group.
Cornerstone - also known as the Greenwood-Edgefield-McCormick-Abbeville
Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse - provides prevention,
intervention, and treatment services to those affected by alcohol,
tobacco, other drugs, and problem gambling. The agency is a
registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization, and donations to
Cornerstone are tax-deductible.
For more information or to request a race registration form, please
contact Teresa Roy at Cornerstone's Greenwood office at 864-227-1001.
