“Food for the Sole” 5k Race scheduled for Saturday, September 22nd at Wesley Commons

web posted September 1, 2012

GREENWOOD – In honor of National Active Aging Week, Wesley Commons will be hosting the third annual “Food for the Sole 5k Run” at 8:30am on Saturday, September 22, 2012.  The public is invited to attend this community-wide event benefiting the Wesley Commons’ Resident Support Fund. Last year, over 160 people participated in the inaugural event.

“This (run/walk) event is an excellent way that Wesley Commons can continue to expand our outreach to the community and benefit a worthwhile cause while also promoting a healthy lifestyle,” said race organizer Jennifer Larkins. “Hundreds of residents at Wesley Commons participate in our wellness program, whether exercising in our state of the art Wellness Complex, or outdoors on our campus,” added Larkins. “We are thrilled to share this sense of excitement, and our beautiful grounds, with others during the Food for the Sole run.”

For runners and walkers the registration fee is only $25 prior to September 1st, 2012.  After September 1st the registration fee will be $30.  The registration fee includes a dry fit t-shirt and breakfast following the race.  The overall male and female winner will receive a free pair of Brooks running shoes.  There will also be age group awards and door prizes at the victory breakfast celebration.  The course is USATF certified.

Race applications are available at: Wellness Works in Greenwood, the Greenwood Family YMCA, or at http://www.active.com or by emailing jlarkins@wesleycommons.org or calling 864-227-7368. Race day registration will be available prior to 8am.

Runners begin the second annual race with much determination.  Last year overall winners were Evann McKibban and Jason Balentine and the masters overall winners were Debbie Flynn and Tim Simpson.  Racers were treated to beautiful weather and good race conditions, and a healthy breakfast after the event.
