Commercial Art Program at Piedmont Tech Utilizes iPads
web posted September 3, 2010
GREENWOOD – New technologies are introduced to
consumers every day. The commercial art program at Piedmont Technical
College has found an innovative way to utilize one of those new devices
as a teaching tool – the Apple iPad.
“At first, an iPad can be seen as a novelty item,” said Kendall Adams,
program coordinator. “But, looking at it closely, it can be useful for
one-on-one instruction in the classroom.”
Adams has downloaded quite a few books in PDF format to his iPad as
well as several useful programs. These books and programs, as well as
Internet access, provide an excellent companion to his teaching.
“When I’m out with a photography class, or in the lab, the iPad gives
me quick access to diagrams, photography books and charts to help
demonstrate a point in the lesson,” Adams said.
With the addition of the new digital rendering and gaming development
technology certificate that has been added to the curriculum, the iPads
are just one example of the technology being integrated into the
commercial art program. Software such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe
Illustrator, Maya and ZBrush, the software used in the creation of the
computer-generated imagery (CGI) for “Avatar,” are among the newest
tools in the program.
The addition of the new software is just one of the improvements to an
upgraded commercial art lab that includes 16 new computers. Adams said
the addition of SmartBoards and new drawing tables are in the future
plans.
“We are always looking for new technology, new ways to provide
information to our students,” said Joel Griffin, assistant vice
president for instructional technology.
“We live in a technology-driven world today,” Adams said. “If you don’t
embrace the technology, you’ll get left behind in the dust.”
For more information on the commercial art program, contact Adams at
