Hong Kong Chinese Restaurant 520A Calhoun Street Johnston SC 29832 803-275-9388 web posted January 10, 2006 Our dining team arrived at Hong Kong Chinese Restaurant at 8:25pm on a Saturday evening. There was plenty of parking right in front of the restaurant and it was brightly lit and welcoming. We were greeted upon entering by co-owner Chang Lam, a recent Charleston, SC transplant who is originally from Hong Kong. Our orders were placed at the counter, and payment is collected when your order is placed. We took our menus to our table to mull over the vast offerings of Szechuan, Hunan, and Cantonese style menu items. We served ourselves from the usual offerings of soft drinks and sweet tea ($1.10) and took our seat. This reviewer’s special soup was loaded with crisp, fresh vegetables, chicken, pork and shrimp, all floating in a delicious rich chicken broth. The Pu Pu Platter was more than four could finish let alone two. It came loaded with shrimp toast, spareribs, wontons, jumbo shrimp, chicken wings, and dumplings (a substitute we requested in place of egg rolls). Although the Pu Pu Platter came warm, scrumptious and was delicious, it was served after the entrée arrived. This is a pet peeve of mine, so it diminished my enjoyment somewhat. The Pork Egg Foo Young combo ($5.50). It was loaded with fluffy egg, sweet onion, hunks of pork and fried golden brown and covered in a rich brown sauce. Both entrees could have served three easily and came with pork fried rice and an egg roll. Our entrees were brought out approximately twelve minutes after we placed our order. They too were fresh and steaming hot. Co-owner Chang checked on us several times to be sure we were enjoying the meal. Overall, we got a great deal for our dining dollar and felt valued as a patron of the establishment. The total for our dining was $28.04. The food was good and the restaurant was clean and cheerful. This team loves oriental food and look forward to dining there again.
