![]() Barrett weighs in on new Republican Leaders web posted November 20, 2006 WASHINGTON DC – Congressman Gresham Barrett (R-SC) issued a statement on the recent election of House Leaders for the Republican Party on Friday. "House Republicans know the public lost their faith in us. The election of our leadership team allows us to refocus and return to our conservative roots.” Rep. Barrett said in his release, “We stand together, more unified than ever and ready to get to work to regain the trust of the American people.” The new leaders are Republican Leader: Rep. John Boehner (R-OH), Republican Whip: Rep. Roy Blunt (R-MO), Conference Chairman: Rep. Adam Putnam (R-FL), Policy Committee Chairman: Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R-MI), Conference Vice-Chair: Rep. Kay Granger (R-TX), Conference Secretary: Rep. John Carter (R-TX), and NRCC Chairman: Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK). Rep. Barrett said, “As we look to the future there is reason to be optimistic. The American people did not leave our party or reject our ideals - the said very loudly they believe we did. Today is an opportunity for each of us to reaffirm our commitment to those who elected us and the principles they elected us to uphold. I have worked hard the last four years to lessen government, lower taxes, bring fiscal responsibility back to the federal government, create energy independence, promote a strong defense, ensure security at home, and encourage traditional values. These are all core beliefs and values that I share with my constituents, and I will continue to work with all like minded colleagues in Congress, regardless of party to pass legislation that support these ideals.” The Republican Party is in the minority in both houses of Congress for the first time since 1994 when they wrestled control away from Democratic after decades of rule with the “Contract for America”. Being responsible for the largest growth in government in the last 20 years, Republicans were said to have revolted against elected officials abandoning those values. “In recent years, as a body, we have forgotten that our main purpose is to serve you and the best interest of our nation. We cannot dwell on the mistakes that were made, but we must learn from them in order to move toward a brighter tomorrow,” Rep. Barrett said in the release. With the race for President soon to be launched in earnest over the next few months, the focus will now be upon the Democratic Party to provide solutions and answers while placating the voters who are strong on support of the military and national security in order to maintain control and a shot at the White House in 2008. With no strong leader from either side of the Isle being popular with voters the race for President will be one of historic significance. For
