Edgefield County roads can be amusing Edgefielddaily.com web posted August 16, 2005 HUMOR - In order to implement the E911 center every road in Edgefield County had to be named. Some people put a lot of thought into the name of their road, others, well let’s just say we wonder. Van Road was to be done one better with the creation of Vann Road. We have Thurmond Road, Jones Road, Jefferson Drive and Lane, Wiley Place, and Coleman Avenue among many others. Of course last names are not enough for some so first and last names are used as in Thomas Mathis Road, Jacob McKie Road, Jake Bryan Road, and Bennie Dorn Road. Not to be outdone by those resulted in Thomas S. Jackson Road. Of course sometimes more than one family name is on the road so we get hyphenated names like Morgan-Bussby, Morton-Moore and White-Dansby Roads. Some names are obvious for their namesake such as Two Mile Road and Deep Step Road. The Beetles must have named Penny Lane, or at least a fan. Of course some must have been jealous that their name was taken. Pleasant Lane must have been another’s choice so they just added a road at the end to create Pleasant Lane Road. We’re not sure how a road can be a lane and a road but there it is. Other names are humorous. Bass Terr just seems like something you would not name your road. Carriee Lane has one too many e’s. Cowpath Lane must have followed a cow driven by Cowboy Way. Grandpa Road is where grandpa lives. Not to be mistaken for Pappa’s Place Road. There is Tweetie Road, Airway Road, and Eastview which runs north and south. Some settle on a name such as Suits Us Lane or Our Road. We cannot forget to mention Hoot N Hollar Lane. (Woo hoo!) An avid cartoon reader must have named Family Circle. Trees are always popular names everywhere so Edgefield County is no different with Ashwood Drive, Big Oak Drive, Birch Drive, Cherry Tree Lane, Chestnut Lane, Elmwood and Pine Tree roads, and of course Twin Oaks Drive. You can enjoy a song as your drive down Singing Tree Lane. We could not locate Hideaway Trail or Hidden Circle. The history of gold “in them thar hills” is shown with Gold Mine Road, Gold Spring Road, and Prospector Road. Rocks get their fair share of mention with Ruby Road, Boulder Ridge Road, Rock Hill Drive and Rock Creek Road. Everyone likes Amazing Grace Court and Angelview Drive located just down the road from Preacher’s Lane. Church Street is crowded on Sundays but you can get there on Promised Land Road. You can see the sun set on Sunset Road or get a tan on Sunhigh Road. You can find Shadow Road until Sundown Road. If you get lost you can wait until sunup and awake to Rooster Lane. You never want to be caught DUI on Whiskey Road or speeding on Turbo Lane, that just seems to be asking for trouble doesn’t it? You can take the long way down Short Cut Road or a short trip down Long Drive. There is even a New Cut Road without there ever being an Old Cut or Cut Road. Nor could we find and old New Market Road. We wonder how many Democrats live on Republican Road. For the hunters there are Deer Trail Point, Hunter’s Run, Quail Run, Rabbit Run, Stag Run, Turkey Road, Bob White Lane and Whitetail Run. Our Native Americans have Indian Hill Court and Indian Ridged Road. There is Broken Arrow and Arrowhead Lake Road too. We turned down one road and found it it was Mays Way not ours. We had to go out of town to find Towns Road but found the next American Idol on Star Road. Running Creek Drive was neck and neck with Running Ridge Road while we caught a few Z's on Restmaster Lane. Mapping the location to Freds Hideaway kind of spoils the name doesn't it? We think we will just relax on Back Forty Drive. We're not even going to ask about Salty Dog Lane.
