Illegal Aliens in Edgefield County?
Some officials say they don't even check anymore

Edgefielddaily.com
web posted April 28, 2005

As Edgefield Daily.com reports on weekly arrest reports we have begun to watch for tendencies. One can spot little difference in categories and certain relationships among the population over short term. However, one drastic relationship stands out as unmistakable.

Just since March 7, 2005 and April 24 we’ve noticed that one minority category amasses an unprecedented 69% of charges for no driver’s license and related charges. A tendency that remains constant over time. With Hispanics making up just 2% of the county population they accrue this nefarious designation.

Edgefield Police Chief Ronald Carter said most of the time the individual’s employer generally pays the fine and the matter is resolved. This response played out with most law enforcement agencies we spoke with. To the question of finding out if the undocumented drivers are undocumented aliens most told Edgefield Daliy.com that it is almost impossible to get federal assistance in the process unless the individual is charged with serious crimes, and even with a felony it can be difficult.

Officials say the INS (Immigration and Naturalization Service) will not pick up, or even express the slightest interest in, illegal aliens. Trying to even get the information becomes a deterrent rather than a solution they said. To detain the individuals, we were told, would create huge deficits in detention centers, especially for smaller counties like Edgefield County.

Many also stated the towns and county miss out on a lot of revenue because individuals who agree to plead guilty and pay before court are allowed lowered fines.

With the heightened sense of homeland security claiming to be protecting and knowing who is within our borders they seem to be lacking at the federal level. The fact out local law enforcement is doing their job and arresting these individuals only to have their fines reduced and their release is what many call a disturbing revalation.
