"Down A Country Road"
by: Aaron Keith Ingle

John Denver once sang, "Country roads, take me home, to the place I belong".

As I take the next step in the grand journey of life, I would like to think it will resemble a ride down a country road rather than a trip down the interstate. Although the interstate is quick and efficient, sometimes life can pass too quickly and the beautiful scenery along the way is nothing but a blur.

The interstate is also one-way with no stop signs or intersections which can make turning around a hassle. In life it is sometimes necessary to stop and look back on what you have done right and wrong, and make a u-turn and correct anything if necessary.

If life could be more like a drive down a county road, it might not be perfect but it would be more worthwhile.  Traveling down a country road takes time and there is no rush, which I hope my life will reflect.

Being an Edgefield county teenager, I have many memories associated with country roads; whether it was the first time I saw a deer grazing on the shoulder of the road, or other memories teenage boys create at the end of dirt roads; all these memories are irreplaceable.

If the rest of my life reflects a drive down a country road, I am doubtless that many more memories will be ingrained in my mind, not a mere blur gained by the fast-paced travel of the interstate. However, country roads are not perfect, just as life is not perfect.

Country roads have potholes and ruts, which we will undoubtedly encounter later in life.  If we get stuck in a rut or blow a tire out in a pothole, the most invaluable thing we can ask for is a true friend.  Many times in life we will get stuck in the rut of school or a job, and hit many potholes such as girls that break your heart or the teacher that gives your one and only "B" on a report card, and when this occurs the
pricelessness of a true friend becomes apparent.  So as we embark on the next phase of the grand journey of life, let's be traveling down a country road, making memories of good times with good friends.

Aaron Ingle will be attending Clemson University this fall for his degree in Civil Engineering.
