JET students build “Future City”
web
posted January 25, 2008
JOHNSTON – A team of
seventh grade
students at JET Middle School are set to compete in the Future City
Competition that will be held Saturday at USC-Aiken with a city they
built, first on computer, and now in scale. “It has been amazing to
watch the progress of these students. I have been so proud of
each one,” 7th grade Math teacher Debbie Courtney said. The city was
built on the computer using the SimCity program is now in the year 2770
and has been replicated in scale by the students.
Since the replica is set at 1 cm equaling 10 meters only a portion of
the city is included in the model measuring 25 by 50 inches.
After using the SimCity 3000 program to build the city the students had
to write a research paper on the Nanotechnology used followed by
preparing an abstract of their city, aptly named “Eagle City”, and
currently has a population of over 300,000 SimCity residents.

The
various teams are eligible for various awards at the regional level
and teams that advance to the National Finals, held in Washington DC,
will vie for scholarships, special awards, and the top prize of a trip
to the US Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama.
The local competition will be held at the Business and Educational
Building at USC-Aiken beginning at 12 noon. The JET team will compete
at 2 pm. “They have worked so hard,” Mrs. Courtney said, adding that a
lot of the time the students worked late into the afternoon on their
own time in order to complete the project they began in October.
Teachers Debbie Courtney and Suzie Yonce coached the students and Penny
Morris and Lee Williams of Strom Thurmond acted as engineering mentors.
