![]() JET installs video surveillance system during Christmas break web posted December 22, 2006 School Resource Officer Reel said the funding for the camera system came from a Safe and Drug Free Schools grant. In all, counting money that rolled over from a previous grant, about $21,000 in funds were made available. Not all the money could be used for the camera systems. In addition to the camera systems the grant money purchased ten radios for the middle schools, a laptop computer, digital camera, and a LCD projector used in presentations to students. Some of the money also went to founding the SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) program at Strom Thurmond. Having the SRO’s install the systems is also saving money for the school district, “Rather than us (Reel and Rushton) being off drawing vacation pay they put us on regular payroll to install the system,” Deputy Reel said. Installation of a system can run into the thousands of dollars. “The district is saving a lot of money with us doing the installation.” A demonstration of the infrared cameras showed fine details of people captured in total darkness and the persons were easily identifiable in the video. The photo to the left shows six of the nine cameras functioning. Deputy Reel said the instalation should be completed this week. For
