Mt. Calvary Kangaroo Kids Backpack Ministry receives $5,000 “Matthew 25: Neighbors in Need” Grant

web posted January 6, 2014

JOHNSTON – Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church’s Kangaroo Kids Backpack Ministry, Johnston, SC, recently received a $5,000 “Lutheran Community Matthew 25: Neighbors in Need” grant from the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation. The funding was awarded to Kangaroo Kids Backpack Ministry based on its effectiveness in addressing physical, emotional and /or spiritual needs in the local community such as food, clothing, shelter, fellowship, and care for the sick based on Jesus’ words in Matthew 25: 35-36.

Kangaroo Kids Backpack Ministry has also elected to participate in a complementary two-to-one challenge grant program sponsored by the Foundation. For every dollar raised by Kangaroo Kids Backpack Ministry from donors by March 31, 2014, the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation will provide an additional 50 cents—up to $5,000—in support of the organization’s ministry.

“We are delighted to assist Mt. Calvary Kangaroo Kids Backpack Ministry through this grant, said Richard Kleven, vice president of the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation. “We trust that this support will strengthen Kangaroo Kids Backpack Ministry’s outreach and ministry to those it serves.”

“We are indeed truly exuberant and very grateful that Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation selected our Backpack Ministry for this substantial grant,” said Lynn Carlson, treasurer for the ministry. “Through our labor and love, we have grown this ministry from serving 12 children when we started in January 2012 to helping 25 children this school year. This grant will allow our Backpack Ministry to expand even further to reach out and minister to the needs of even more hungry children. God is good!”

Kangaroo Kids Backpack Ministry provides food to children at Douglas Elementary School who are at risk of having little or no food over the weekend. Food is sent home each week during the school year. According to the volunteers, our opportunity now is the challenge grant which can provide even more funding for the ministry. All donations received from now until the deadline of March 31 qualify for the two-to-one match, up to $5,000. Donations, made payable to Kangaroo Kids Backpack Ministry, can be sent to Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, 1186 Mt. Calvary Rd., Johnston SC 29832. For more information, please contact the church office at (803) 685- 7523.
