![]() Counterfeit travelers checks have Nigerian connection web posted January 11, 2007 JOHNSTON – A Johnston man found himself $2,000 in debt after cashing counterfeit American Express Traveler’s checks for a “friend” in Nigeria. Johnston Police were called to meet with the man and a representative of First Citizen’s Bank in Johnston when two of the checks were returned. Each of the four checks cashed were for $500. Johnston Police Chief Chris Aston said the man claimed to know the 24-year-old female that sent the checks to be cashed. “She told him that she was having trouble cashing them in Nigeria and asked him to cash them here and send her the money. He was told to keep $100 from each check for cashing them.” The checks were cashed in late December. Chief Aston said there is little his department can do to apprehend the suspects because they are outside of the United States. Foreign countries do not cooperate with US authorities in tracking down fraud cases, including nearby Canada, where a recent rise in reports lead. Chief Aston said he is working on a release to advise residents on how to protect themselves from scams by fraud rings. The victim has agreed to repay the bank for the funds received. For
