Northside Man Arrested for Assaulting Possible Theft Suspect
web posted January 12, 2013
JOHNSTON – Edgefield County Sheriff's
Deputies were called to a Long Cane Road home where the Johnston man
claimed two men drove up in his yard with one of them accusing him a
stealing an above ground well pump from his mother's Northside home.
The Johnston man said he tried to calm down 31-year-old Sammy Morgan
when he was punched on the left side of his face with a closed fist.
The 41-year-old victim said the two "wrestled" for a short time and
Morgan them left the scene yelling, "This ain't over. I got something
for you," as he departed the scene. A deputy in route to the call
spotted a vehicle matching the description given by the victim and made
a traffic stop and identified the passenger as Morgan.
According to an incident report, Morgan admitted being at the scene but
provided very few details of what happened. After a short investigation
Morgan was charged with assault and battery in the third degree and was
transported to the Edgefield County Detention Center for booking.
Three hours later, Mr. Morgan's family called to report the theft of
the above ground well pump at the family home on Highway 378 and all
said they saw a red truck at the scene just prior to it being
discovered missing. The victim, the report states, does own a red truck.
Mr. Morgan's sister spoke with him shortly after the pump was
discovered missing around 2 pm and relayed them seeing a red truck on
the property before the pump went missing. According to the incident
report, Mr. Morgan told his sister he knew who it was and would call
her back.
Evidently, the victim of the assault was who Morgan had in mind as the
suspect and rather than call law enforcement decided to take matters
into his own hand and ended up being the one arrested.
