Traffic
stop leads to drug arrest
web posted January 18, 2006 JOHNSTON – Early Saturday morning Johnston Police Officer Joseph Mathis conducted a routine traffic stop of a truck on Addison Street. Once the truck stopped, the driver of the truck jumped out of the truck and took off. Officer John Brown gave foot pursuit and captured the man and returned him to the location of the truck. While talking with other passengers in the truck Officer Mathis asked the owner of the truck if he could search the vehicle. The man agreed. Before conducting the search Officer Mathis asked the passenger if he could search his person. He agreed. The man also had a jacket in his lap and a quick search of the pockets found a container with a white powder believed to be cocaine and several “white rock” substances which appeared to be crack cocaine. At that time, Officer Mathis placed Fredrick Dekonte Robinson, 22, of Salon Road under arrest for possession of cocaine and crack cocaine. However, Mr. Robinson’s troubles did not end there. Once arriving at the Edgefield Detention Center for booking officers discovered a clear plastic baggie with a white powder substance, believed to be cocaine, and a clear baggie of marijuana. Currently Mr. Robinson is being held on several drug charges, more charges may be pending. The driver of the truck, Charlie Leroy Maxfield Jr., 23, of Hayes Drive, North Augusta was charged with no driver's license and having an open container in the vehicle and was also booked into the Detention Center.
