Robbery at Dollar General in Johnston - Suspects at Large

web posted January 19, 2013 - UPDATED: 12:01 am
JOHNSTON – The Dollar General on Lee Street in Johnston was the scene of a robbery Friday night that was originally said to be an armed robbery. The 911 call came into dispatch at 9:33 pm and Johnston and Edgefield Police as well as Sheriff's Deputies converged on the scene and set up a perimeter to cut off the robbers escape route. The Sheriff's Bloodhound Team was also called to track the two black male suspects.

According to information from the scene, the two black males wearing hoodies walked into the store around 9:30 pm and the first shoved the cashier aside, who had the register drawer open at the time, and the second man went to the side as they both started grabbing cash and putting it in a backpack.

The two robbers fled out the front door followed by the cashier who returned moments later and reported the robbery to the manager. The two robbers made off with an undisclosed amount of cash. Police were able to find close to $300 of the stolen cash near the HVAC unit next to the store on the path the robbers took during their escape.

The Sheriff's Bloodhounds tracked the robbers from the store to a street one block over and the trail went dead. It is unknown if the robbers had a car parked nearby or if foot traffic in the area disrupted the bloodhounds tracking.

Both suspects are said to be black males standing around 5' 8" tall and slender built. No age range was available. One may have been wearing a Washington Redskins scull cap under his hoodie.

The Johnston Police Department is leading the investigation. Video surveillance was viewed and copies were being made of the footage to help identify the suspects. Edgefield Daily will release stills of the footage as soon as it is available, if not the video itself.

Anyone with information should call the Sheriff's Dispatch at 803-637-5337. You do not have to give your name to provide information.
